Condoms Are The Perfect Form Of Safe Sex

Do you ever wonder whether condoms are the perfect form of safe sex? The answer is unfortunately- NO. There is no condom on the market currently that offers 100% protection against conception or contraction of an STD. To increase the efficacy of a condom to prevent pregnancy many couples opt to use condoms with other methods of birth control. For example birth control pills.

It is however crucial to note that condoms offer the best STD protection. In order to be effective the condom must be used correctly and every single time during intercourse. You should however keep in mind that even when used correctly, condoms offer no protection against STDs spread via sores on the skin (such as genital warts ) if the affected area is not completely covered by the condom.

Condoms (both male and female) are however extremely effective at providing protection against STIs that are transmitted via bodily fluids in the form, semen and vaginal fluid. Condoms act as a barrier and can protect you against diseases such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis.

The majority of condoms on the market today are safe since the FDA requires stringent testing of all latex and polyurethane condoms before hitting the shelves at your local store. Manufacturers are required by law to perform product spot-checks. Apart from legal rules and regulations the FDA randomly collects condom samples from warehouses whereafter they undergo water leak checks. Take the time to read the label on the box carefully and to skip brands that do not specifically mention that their condoms offer pregnancy and STI protection. And remember if a condom does not cover the whole penis, it will not give complete protection!

Natural condoms have become a popular alternative to latex condoms for the eco-conscious individual or persons who suffer from latex allergies. Even though these condom offer protection against conception, they do not offer protect against STIs. Individuals who have latex allergies should rather use polyurethane condoms. Even though they are a little more costly they offer a better fit and similar protection as latex condoms against conception and STIs.

If a condom breaks during intercourse, stop intercourse immediately and remove the broken condom. If there is a chance that one or both the partners is STD positive, consult a medical professional as soon as possible. The physician will perform the necessary tests and advise you on possible STD signs and symptoms. If conception is a concern, the doctor will most probably prescribe emergency contraception pills or insert an intrauterine device (IUD). These can help prevent pregnancy when used early after a condom flops.

While condoms are not perfect, if you're going to have intercourse, they are the best tool to protect yourself, even if you are using other birth control methods.
